8 Linen Reed Count
There are two systems in use, in addition to the one for the heavy linens (see Dundee Reed Counts), viz.: - that for drills which is based upon the number of beers or porters of 40 threads (20 splits) on 30-in.; the other used for Irish damasks, is based upon the number of beers of 20 splits or 40 threads contained in the width of the cloth which is usually given in quarter yards. Thus 100 beer 5/4, or 100 beer 8/4, means 2,000 splits or 4,000 threads on 45-in. and 72-in respectively. -
9 Irish Beetle Finish
A finish given to linen fabrics which produces a soft, full, thready feel with glossy surface. The cloth remains fresh and bright much longer than fabrics finished by any other method. No filling mixtures, except a little starch, is used, so that the finish is a lasting one and is not affected by heat or cold, or by dry or damp atmosphere. The cloth is wound on iron or wooden beams and is subjected to a rapid succession of elastic blows from a series of hammers. After beetling a gloss is given to the fabric by calendering.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Irish Beetle Finish

15 Carrageen Moss
A kind of seaweed, or algas (Chrondrus Crispus) found on the coasts of Ireland. It is first bleached and dried by exposure to the atmosphere and in this state is sold. When boiled it forms a highly gelatinous substance, like isinglass. The early Irish linen manufacturers used large quantities for flax dressing. It was also used, when boiled with milk, as a food, making a nourishing jelly. Also known as Ireland moss and Irish moss. -
